A pious widow who became a warrior heroine, Judith saves Bethulia by entering Holofernes' camp and then turning her power against him.
The Book of Judith tells how a widow from Bethulia saves her city besieged by the army of Holofernes, general of Nebuchadnezzar. As the leaders consider capitulating, Judith urges them to maintain confidence. She leaves her mourning clothes, adorns himself with care and goes with his servant to the enemy camp. Holofernes, seduced by her beauty and convinced that she will betray her people, welcomes them. After several days, he organizes a banquet and drinks until lose consciousness. Left alone with him, Judith grabs his sword, decapitates him, places her head in a bag carried by her servant and returns to Bethulia. The discovery causes the panic of the enemy army and the victory of the city. This narrative offers artists several very different moments. The banquet allows us to contrast calm appearance and hidden threat. The beheading imposes a violent physical action, made immediate by Caravaggio and Artemisia Gentileschi.
