Judith Leyster was born in Haarlem in 1609. Her family name, from her father's brewery, means guiding star and inspires her monogram formed from the letters JL accompanied by a star. Her training remains imperfectly known, but her art dialogues with Frans Pietersz de Grebber, the Caravaggesques of Utrecht and especially the circle of Frans and Dirck Hals.
