1609 -1660 · Haarlem, Amsterdam and Dutch Golden Age
Judith Leyster was born in Haarlem in 1609. Her family name, from her father's brewery, means guiding star and inspires her monogram formed from the letters JL accompanied by a star. Her training remains imperfectly known, but her art dialogues with Frans Pietersz de Grebber, the Caravaggesques of Utrecht and especially the circle of Frans and Dirck Hals. From 1628, when she was only nineteen, a Haarlem chronicler celebrated her talent. From 1628 smiling in front of her easel, brushes in hand, affirming both professional status and virtuosity. The Joyeuse Compagnie and The Joyeux Buveur capture music, laughter and movement with a lively touch. The Proposal reverses gallant conventions by showing a woman focused on her work facing a man's money. After her marriage in 1636 to the painter Jan Miense Molenaer, her production became rarer. Long attributed to Hals, his works were rediscovered at the end of the 19th century thanks to his monogram. The "Judith Leyster" selection notably compares Self-Portrait and The Joyeuse Company. His reading favors atmosphere.
Leyster paints the moment when the face comes alive: a laugh, a song or a refusal become the real subject of the painting.
