1811 -1889 · Nantes, England, Barbizon and L'Isle-Adam
Jules Dupré was born in Nantes in 1811 and began by decorating porcelain in his father's factories. This first practice developed his sense of material and color before he devoted himself to landscape. Installed in Paris, he studied briefly with Jean-Michel Diébolt and exhibited at the Salon in 1831. His trip to England in 1834 was decisive: the works of John Constable and JMW Turner showed him how wind, clouds and humidity can become the real subject of the painting. Close to Théodore Rousseau, Dupré traveled with him through the Landes and the Pyrenees and participated in the renewal of the landscape associated with Barbizon, even if he worked more willingly around the Oise. Established in L'Isle-Adam in 1849, he paints ponds, large trees, herds, paths and sunsets with a thick touch and dramatic light. The Waterer and the large oak give the tree an almost heroic presence; Cows crossing a ford unites animal movement, reflection and unstable sky. Dupré does not only describe a place: he seeks the emotion produced by nature in transformation. The "Jules Dupré" selection notably compares L’Abreuvoir and the large oak and L’Automne. His reading favors space.
At Dupré, the landscape has a character: the tree resists, the water becomes cloudy and the sky announces its own drama.
