Named in 1895 director of the Krakow School of Fine Arts, he reformed it in depth and contributed to the emergence of Young Poland. His winter views often reduce the palette to white, blue, brown and gray; a few traces of vegetation or the dark course of a river are enough to give depth and silence. The Montmartre cemetery and the Old Man Praying also reveal his taste for architecture and meditative figure.
