Jusepe Leonardo was born in Calatayud in 1601 and went to Madrid with his father around 1612. Between 1616 and 1621, he was apprenticed in the studio of Pedro de las Cuevas; tradition also mentions a visit to Eugenio Cajés, whose narrative clarity marks his first paintings. Leonardo is noted for his religious and historical compositions where space, group movement and light remain firmly ordered.
