Jusepe Leonardo was born in Calatayud in 1601 and went to Madrid with his father around 1612. Between 1616 and 1621, he was apprenticed in the studio of Pedro de las Cuevas; tradition also mentions a visit to Eugenio Cajés, whose narrative clarity marks his first paintings. Leonardo is noted for his religious and historical compositions where space, group movement and light remain firmly ordered. In the 1630s, he received important royal commissions for the Buen Retiro Palace. In the 1630s, he received important royal commissions for the Buen Retiro Palace. The Surrender of Juliers belonged to the military cycle of the Salon des Royales: instead of reducing the event to a melee, the painter constructed a political ceremony, punctuated by spears, horses, standards and handing over keys. He also worked for the archbishopric of Toledo, notably on sets of altarpieces, and practiced wall decorations as well as ephemeral architecture. His career, interrupted prematurely by illness, left a scattered but essential corpus for understanding Spanish court painting between Mannerist heritage and Baroque naturalism. The "Jusepe Leonardo" selection notably compares La Surrender de Juliers. His reading favors movement.
In Leonardo, the battle becomes a readable story: space, gesture and architecture give each action its political weight.
