Gustave Courbet makes realism a practice based on what he knows and can see. The women in his work belong to several registers: sisters and relatives in portraits, studio models, bathers, readers or leisure figures. From the 1850s, his nudes challenged the smooth and timeless bodies accepted by the Academy. Clothing brands, loose hair, fatigue, water or contemporary accessories made the figure recognizable as a woman of her time rather than a goddess. This modernity provokes scandals and debates.
