Since 1897 · Krefeld, fine arts, applied arts and avant-gardes
The Kaiser Wilhelm Museum opened in Krefeld in 1897 as a museum and memorial to Emperor Wilhelm I. Its first director, Friedrich Deneken, quickly gave it a much more ambitious orientation than that of a monument commemorative. In the spirit of the reform movements around 1900, it brought together fine arts, applied arts, architecture, industry and everyday culture. Paintings, sculptures, posters, ceramics, furniture, Japanese prints and contemporary objects must form the public's taste while providing models to artisans and manufacturers in the textile city. Art Nouveau thus became one of the first pillars of the fund. In 1923, the acquisition of the Deutsches Museum für Kunst in Handel und Gewerbe, formed by Karl Ernst Osthaus, reinforces this vocation as a design museum. After the war, director Paul Wember opened the institution to the international avant-gardes, to kinetic art, to the New Realism, ZERO, Pop Art and installations. Between 1960 and 1968, the building was profoundly modernized: the imperial symbols were partly removed and a single-storey entrance affirmed a more democratic relationship with the city. The museum today forms with Haus Lange and Haus Esters, the two villas of Mies van der Rohe, the ensemble of Kunstmuseen Krefeld. Monet's Parliament at Sunset and Mondrian's Tableau n° XI summarize two extremes of sound course. One dissolves architecture in the atmosphere; the other reduces painting to measured relationships of lines and planes. Between these two works, the collection recounts the transition from observed impression to constructed abstraction. The "Kaiser Wilhelm Museum" selection notably compares Parliament, Sunset and Table n° XI. Its reading favors space.
In Krefeld, the museum has never separated the painting from the object: modernity becomes a way of organizing both the gaze and daily life.
