Karel Dujardin was born in Amsterdam in 1626. His training remained imperfectly documented, but his art developed through contact with Italianate Dutch painters and an early stay in Rome. He observes with rare accuracy horses, cows, sheep, goats and dogs, which he places in landscapes bathed in Mediterranean light. Roads, fords, inns and ruins become the calm theater of shepherds, travelers or charlatans. Dujardin, however, is not limited to the landscape: his portraits sought after by Amsterdam's elite and his elegant self-portrait attest to mastery of the face and pose. However, he also practices etching, where the precision of the line regains the attention paid to animals and daily gestures. After years in the Netherlands, notably in Amsterdam and The Hague, he left for Italy in the 1670s and died in Venice in 1678.
