Karl Nordstrom was born in 1855 on the island of Tjörn, off the Swedish west coast. After a stint at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm, he left for Paris in 1880, discovered impressionism and joined the artists' colony of Grez-sur-Loing. His first outdoor landscapes were clear and mobile, but his opposition to academic conservatism soon led him towards a more independent conception of Swedish art. He participated in the Opponents' movement in 1885 and then in the founding of the Konstnärsförbundet, the Union of Artists, which he chaired from 1896 to 1920. In the early 1890s, Japanese prints and Gauguin's synthesist painting encouraged him to simplify shapes and colors.
