1879 -1935 · Kyiv, Moscow, Vitebsk, Petrograd and suprematism
Kasimir Malevich, also transcribed Kazimir Malevich, was born in 1879 near Kyiv into a Polish family. After beginnings marked by impressionism, symbolism and neoprimitivism, he joined the Russian avant-gardes in Moscow. His peasants, loggers and urban scenes gradually fragmented the figure under the influence of cubism and futurism. In 1915, during the 0.10 exhibition in Petrograd, he presented the Black Square and affirmed suprematism: a painting based on pure sensation, freed from the representation of objects. Squares, rectangles, crosses and circles seem to float, pivot or move away in a white field designed as infinite space. Malevich does not reduce not art with decorative geometry; he seeks a spiritual and cosmic language adapted to a time of upheaval. In Vitebsk, he taught and brought together the UNOVIS group, then continued theoretical research, architecture and design. After his trip to Warsaw, Berlin and the Bauhaus in 1927, Soviet pressure limited his abstract activity. After his trip to the peasantry and the portrait with an enigmatic frontality which retained suprematist rigor. His late figures return to the peasantry and portraiture with an enigmatic frontality which retains suprematist rigor.
