1879 -1942 · Lviv, Krakow, Paris and Houtsoule culture
Kazimierz Sichulski was born in Lviv in 1879. After brief university studies, he joined the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow, where Leon Wyczółkowski, Józef Mehoffer and Stanisław Wyspiaÿski passed on to him a taste for drawing, pastel and monumental art. He completed his training in Vienna, Munich, Rome and Paris, notably at the Colarossi Academy. A trip to the Hutsoule region during the winter of 1904-1905 became decisive. Sichulski discovered in the mountain communities of the Carpathians a visual culture where costume, rite, music, religion and landscape formed a living whole. Weddings, rites, music, religion and landscape became a living whole. Marriages, shepherds, Hutsou women and ceremonies became the central subjects of his painting. The Hutsul Madonna transposes Christian iconography into this local world without lowering it to the picturesque: frontality, triptych, textile patterns and intense color unite sacredness and regional identity. Sichulski is also a remarkable caricaturist, lithographer, creator of stained glass windows, posters and decorations. Teaching in Lviv then at the Krakow Academy, he linked Young Poland, expressionism and the decorative arts until his death in Lviv in 1942. The "Kazimierz Sichulski" selection notably compares Hutsul Madonna. His reading favors the material.
Sichulski transforms folklore into monumental language: Houtsoul costume becomes color, rhythm and spiritual presence.
