Konrad Witz was probably born around 1400 in Rottweil, Swabia. Documented in Basel in 1434, member of the guild then citizen of the city, he developed a painting which broke with the abstract elegance of international Gothic. His figures are heavy, present, dressed in draperies which really occupy the space. Witz observes with exceptional attention the light on the metal, the folds, the glass and especially the water. The fragments of the altar of the Mirror of Salvation bear witness to its ability to give concrete weight to biblical and historical stories. His masterpiece signed and dated 1444, The Miraculous Fishing, testify to his ability to give concrete weight to biblical and historical stories. This union of topography, optics and faith constitutes one of the major advances in northern painting. Saint Christopher, Pietà and the Annunciation also show his taste for powerful bodies, constructed spaces and contained emotions. Died around 1445 -1446, Witz also left few works, but a decisive influence. The "Konrad Witz" selection notably compares The Miraculous Fishing and Angel of the Annunciation. His reading favors details.
Witz makes the miracle credible by installing it in an observed world: water, mountains and the body have the same weight of truth.
