Konstantin Korovin was born in Moscow in 1861 into a family sensitive to the arts. At the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, he studied with Alexei Savrassov and Vasily Polenov, became friends with Valentin Serov and Isaac Levitan, then joined Abramtsevo's circle around patron Savva Mamontov. Very early on, its quick touch and light color moved away from narrative realism. Travel in Spain, France and the Russian North expanded its repertoire.
