Illusionist ceilings, moving crowds, curved architecture and sumptuous colors make Pierre de Cortone one of the great creators of high baroque.
Pietro Berrettini, called Pietro da Cortona or Peter of Cortona, was born in 1596 in the Tuscan city of Cortona. Trained in Florence then settled young in Rome, he studied Antiquity, Raphael, Annibale Carracci and Lanfranco's new illusionist research. Protected by the Sacchetti family then by the Barberinis, he obtained the commission which defined his career: the Triumph of Divine Providence, painted between 1632 and 1639 on the ceiling of the great salon of the Barberini Palace. Feigned architecture, allegorical figures and clouds compose a continuous spectacle intended to exalt the pontificate of Urban VIII. In Florence, he then decorated the Planets rooms of the Pitti Palace for the Medici. Returning to Rome, he led painting, architecture and drawing, notably at Santa Maria in Vallicella and in the church of Santi Luca e Martina. President of the Academy of Saint Luke, he imposed a decorative language that radiated throughout aristocratic Europe. He died in Rome in 1669.
