Tickets, papers, reliefs and recovered words make Kurt Schwitters the creator of a total universe called Merz.
Kurt Schwitters was born in Hanover in 1887 and studied at the Dresden Academy. After figurative beginnings, he approached expressionism, constructivism and Dada networks without agreeing to limit his activity to a movement. In 1919, he invented the word "Merz", a cut fragment of the term Kommerz, to designate a practice capable of assembling all the materials of the modern world. Tickets, newspapers, strings, wood, painting and found objects become collages, reliefs, sculptures, poems and typographies. Merzbild 1A preserves the traces of use of the fragments while organizing them in a precise rhythmic structure. Schwitters soon extended Merz to his environment with Merzbau, gradual transformation of his Hanoverian house into immersive architecture. He published the magazine Merz, composed the Ursonate and collaborated with the European avant-gardes. Classified as a "degenerate artist" by the Nazis, he left Germany in 1937, lived in Norway then reached England in 1940. Despite exile and internment, he continued landscapes, collages and new projects by Merzbau until his death in Kendal in 1948.
