Around a table, thirteen figures concentrate three essential stories: Christ's last supper, the announcement of Judas' betrayal and the institution of the Eucharist.

The Last Supper represents the last meal shared by Christ and his twelve apostles in Jerusalem, at the time of the Jewish Passover. The four Gospels record the scene, but artists often combine several moments. Jesus announces that one of the disciples will betray him, provoking questions, gestures and looks. He also shares bread and wine by associating them with his body and his blood, a founding act of the Eucharist. This double dimension, narrative and sacramental, explains the subject's constant presence in refectories, churches, altarpieces and private painting. The table allows artists to organize thirteen characters while distinguishing Christ. Judas can be isolated from the other side, placed in the shadows, clutching the purse of thirty silver coins or reaching out to the same dish as Jesus. Starting with Leonardo da Vinci, he is often integrated into the group, which makes the tension more psychological. The four works the deductions show several solutions. Agnolo Gaddi constructs a hieratic medieval scene where each apostle remains readable. Philippe de Champaigne favors order, clarity and spiritual silence. Rubens animates the table through the light, bodies and collective reaction. Holbein tightens the figures in a space where gestures and faces carry the drama. Choosing a reproduction of the Last Supper thus amounts to choosing between meditation, story, monumentality and human emotion.
