Angular portraits, tawny colors and progressive abstraction make Lajos Tihanyi a major figure in Hungarian modernism.

Lajos Tihanyi was born in Budapest in 1885. Having become deaf and mute after childhood meningitis, he developed a particularly intense mode of observation through drawing. Largely self-taught, he joined young Hungarian artists who discovered Cézanne, Matisse, Fauvism and Cubism. He participated in the Group of Eight, founded in 1909, whose exhibitions played an essential role in the emergence of Hungarian modernism.
