Since 1856 · Old masters of European impressionism
The Landesmuseum Hannover was born from civic roots. In 1852, the Natural History Society of Hanover, the Historical Association of Lower Saxony and the Association for the Public Art Collection decided to raise their funds. THE Hannoversches Museum für Kunst und Wissenschaft opened in 1856 in the Sophienstrasse. Having become a provincial museum, in 1902 it joined the monumental Maschpark building which still houses it. The institution today combines several worlds of knowledge: natural history, archaeology, ethnology and art. Its KunstWelten follow painting and sculpture from the Middle Ages to the early 20th century. The Gallery of Old Masters includes German, Dutch and art italian, enriched in 1954 by works from the former Kestner-Museum. Modern masters open a panorama that goes from romanticism to impressionism and the first avant-gardes. Caspar David Friedrich, Claude Monet, Auguste Rodin and Paula Modersohn-Becker sit alongside Max Liebermann, Max Slevogt and Lovis Corinth, often united as the great trio of German impressionism. The graphic collection, rich in more than twenty thousand drawings and prints, extends this European history. The four selected paintings concentrate several strengths of the museum. Monet transforms signals, rails and steam into a painting of modernity. Renoir confronts yellow rocks and blue sea in a light mediterranean. Signac dissolves Venice in the colorful mist. Friedrich finally gives the portrait an interior gravity characteristic of German romanticism. The "Landesmuseum Hannover" selection notably compares La Gare Saint-Lazare, the signals - Monet and Yellow Rocks with blue sea - Renoir. His reading favors composition.
At the Landesmuseum Hannover, art is not isolated: it dialogues with history, cultures and sciences in a museum born from the sharing of civic collections.
