Lazar Markovitch Lissitzky, known as El Lissitzky, was born in 1890 in Potchinok in the Russian Empire. Refused by an academy due to quotas imposed on Jewish students, he studied architecture in Darmstadt and traveled to Europe before returning to Russia during the First World War. His first illustrated books participated in the Yiddish cultural revival. Invited in 1919 by Marc Chagall to teach in Vitebsk, he met Kasimir Malevich and joined the UNOVIS supremacist circle. Lissitzky then invented the Proun, "projects for the affirmation of the new": paintings, drawings and lithographs where axes, volumes and plans tilt the surface towards architecture. In Berlin in the 1920s, he became a major mediator between the Soviet and European avant-gardes. Typography, photomontage, book, poster, exhibition scenography and architectural project extended the same principle for him: organizing space to direct the gaze and action. Despite illness, he pursued extensive editorial and exhibition commissions in the USSR until his death in 1941. His Prouns did not represent a specific building; they offer the viewer the mental experience of a world under construction until his death in 1941. The "Lazar Lissitzky" selection notably compares Proun 19D and Proun 1E (City). His reading favors color.
Lissitzky does not place the shapes on the page: he starts work on them, between painting, books and architecture.
