1794 -1880 · Paris, Rome, history painting and academic teaching
Léon Cogniet was born in Paris in 1794. A student of Pierre-Narcisse Guérin at the School of Fine Arts, he won the Prix de Rome in 1817 and stayed at the Villa Medici. His Italian studies already show particular attention to intimate light and daily life, such as The Artist in His Room at the Villa Medici. Back in Paris, Cogniet established himself at the Salon through history painting, portraiture and major decorative commissions. His Scene from The Massacre of the Innocents condenses tragedy in the image of a mother protecting her child: rather than multiplying figures, he concentrates emotion in a silent face-to-face encounter. He participates in the decorations of the Louvre and several churches, while producing subjects related to national history, the Empire and the Egyptian expedition. From the 1840s, teaching occupied an increasing place. Professor at the School of Fine Arts and in his studio, he trained more than a hundred students, including Léon Bonnat and numerous women artists welcomed in the workshop led with his sister Marie-Amélie. His influence thus comes as much through his paintings as through a pedagogy based on drawing, composition and clarity of the story. The "Léon Cogniet" selection thus compares La Veuve Clicquot and her great-granddaughter and The Paris National Guard who left for the army. His reading favors drawing.
Cogniet knows how to move the story towards the intimate: a look, a room or a mother are enough to carry an entire event.
