Léon-Jean-Bazille Perrault was born in Poitiers in 1832. After initial local training, he moved to Paris and studied with François-Édouard Picot then William Bouguereau, whose taste for precise drawing, continuous modeling and accessible subjects he shared. Perrault exhibited regularly at the Salon from 1861 to 1906, building a long career based on mythological painting, the nude, portraits and especially childhood and maternity scenes.
