Leonaert - often Frenchified Leonard - Bramer is one of Delft's most original personalities in the 17th century. Born in 1596, he left the United Provinces at eighteen, crossed France then reached Rome, where he stayed for a long time between 1616 and 1628. Member of the Bentvueghels and protégé of Italian patrons, he discovered Adam Elsheimer, the Caravaggios and the large wall decorations. His nocturnal scenes earned him the nickname "Leonardo delle Notti". Back in Delft, he joined the guild of Saint-Luc in 1629 and worked for the local elites and the house of Orange, producing history paintings, drawings, decorations and rare Nordic frescoes. Abraham and the three Angels, dated around 1640, illustrates the episode in Genesis where Abraham offers hospitality to three celestial visitors. Bramer avoids a simple conversation: ruins, gestures, groups and light give the encounter the scope of a revelation. The broken column opens the space, while the angels are distinguished by their presence rather than by an excess of attributes.
