Léon Spilliaert was born in Ostend in 1881 into a family of perfumers. After a very brief stint at the Bruges Academy, he trained essentially alone. Reading, symbolist literature, Ensor and especially the works of Odilon Redon nourish his beginnings. Employed by the Brussels publisher Edmond Deman, Spilliaert discovered the writers and artists of the Belgian avant-garde.
