Impressionist light, musical intimacy and a nourished look at Japan give Lilla Cabot Perry an essential place in the international circulation of modern art.

Lilla Cabot Perry was born in Boston in 1848 into a cultured New England family. She began her artistic training relatively late, after her marriage and the birth of her children. From 1887, the family lived in Paris; Perry studied painting, exhibited at the Salon and discovered the work of Claude Monet in 1889. She became his friend and rented a house in Giverny for nine summers, where the painter's advice helped her release her touch and directly observe variations in light. Portraits of his daughters, musical scenes, gardens and interiors became his favorite subjects. From 1898, the painter's stay in Japan became his favorite subjects. prints, textiles, gardens and asymmetrical framing, produced approximately eighty paintings and helped raise awareness of American impressionism in Tokyo. The Trio, Tokyo, Japan and Japanese Garden bring together Western intimacy and print-inspired space. Back in the United States, she exhibited, wrote poetry and actively defended Monet and Impressionism to the American public.
