Barcelona, 1863 -1929 · Modernism, darkness and social consciousness
Lluís Graner I Arrufi was born and died in Barcelona, from 1863 to 1929. Trained at the Barcelona School of Fine Arts with Benet Mercadé, he practiced portraiture, landscape and especially genre scenes. Linked to Modernism, it is distinguished less by impressionism or symbolism than by a naturalism enriched with luminous contrasts close to tenebrism. The Red Committee, painted in 1901, is an oil on canvas measuring 110.5 × 160 cm. In a dark interior, daylight arrives through a window but remains filtered by a red cortina: the men gathered together, probably activists or trade unionists, seek not to be seen from the outside. The subject is part of the workers' conflicts of catalonia industrialized and can evoke republican groups linked to Alejandro Lerroux. After 1904, Graner extended his modernity to the theater by creating the Graner Shows and Auditions, mixing text, scenography, music and first cinematographic processes. The "Lluís Graner" selection notably compares The Red Committee. His reading favors space.
The cortine protects the meeting and colors its name: in Graner, light itself becomes political.
