Lodovico Carracci was born in Bologna in 1555 and died there in 1619. With his cousins Agostino and Annibale, he founded the Accademia degli Incamminati and participated in the decisive reform of Bolognese painting: observation of truth, readable emotion, color inherited from Northern Italy and composition free of mannerist artifices. In The Agony in the Garden, painted around 1590 and known from several small format versions intended for private devotion, Christ receives from the angel the chalice and the instruments of the Passion while the apostles sleep; in the distance, Judas and the soldiers approach. Supernatural light isolates acceptance of sacrifice. The Vision of Saint Francis at the Portiuncula, executed around 1601 -1603, on the contrary develops an ample apparition: the Virgin designates Christ, and he shows Francis as the one who shared his sufferings. Mentioned first in the Zambeccari chapel, this image unites sacred theater, tenderness and doctrinal clarity.
