Lorenzo Lippi was born in Florence in 1606. Trained with Matteo Rosselli, he grew up in an environment that combined Tuscan drawing, narrative clarity and direct observation of the model. His religious paintings, portraits and allegories generally refused emphasis in favor of solid figures, readable expressions and calm light. Between 1647 and 1649, Lippi stayed in Innsbruck as court painter to Archduchess Claude de Medici. There he produced portraits and frequented the painter Salvator Rosa, while pursuing literary activity.
