1707 -1771 · Paris, Madrid and court portrait
Born in Toulon in 1707 into a dynasty of painters, Louis-Michel van Loo trained with his father Jean-Baptiste, worked in Turin and Rome then won the grand prize of the Royal Academy in 1726. Received at the Academy in 1733, he was called to Madrid in 1737 to succeed Jean Ranc as chamber painter to Philippe V. He became the main portrait painter of the Spanish royal family and actively participated in the founding of the Academy of San Fernando, of which he was appointed director in 1752. His portraits combined architectural frames, large curtains, furniture, badges and sumptuous fabrics. Back in Paris, he painted Louis XV, the aristocracy and the intellectual world, while exhibiting regularly at the Salon. Its production also includes mythologies and tapestry boxes. The "Louis-Michel van Loo" selection notably compares Felipe V and Isabel Farnesio - Louis-Michel van Loo and Barbara de Braganza, Queen of Spain - Louis-Michel van Loo. His reading favors space.
Van Loo makes the portrait a scene of power where the setting proclaims rank without erasing the individuality of the face.
