Luca Cambiaso was born in 1527 in Moneglia, Liguria. He trained with his father Giovanni Cambiaso and collaborated from adolescence on Genoese palace decorations. A probable stay in Rome around 1547 -1550 revealed Michelangelo to him and reinforced his taste for powerful bodies, tense gestures and theatrical shortcuts. Cambiaso became the most famous Mannerist painter in Genoa. In palaces and churches, he deployed immense frescoes where architecture, figures and illusion were thought together. His drawing is immediately recognizable: in palaces and churches, he deploys immense frescoes where architecture, figures and illusion are thought of together. In palaces and churches, he displays immense frescoes where architecture, figures and illusion are thought of together. His drawing is immediately recognizable: the human body is simplified into geometric volumes, sometimes almost cubic, in order to very quickly capture pose, movement and light. This method is not cold; on the contrary, it allows him to invent with exceptional freedom. Venus and Adonis combine sensuality, twist and landscape, while The Deposition concentrates Christian drama in the diagonals of bodies and the exchange of glances. In his maturity, his language becomes calmer and his nocturnal scenes use very modern artificial lighting. Called to Spain by Philip II in 1583, Cambiaso worked at the Escorial, notably at the vast Glory of the basilica choir. He died in Madrid in 1585, leaving a profound influence on Genoese and European drawing. The selection "Luca Cambiaso" notably compares Venus and Adonis and La Deposition. Its reading favors details.
Cambiaso reduces the body to a few volumes to better release movement: geometry becomes a speed of thought.
