Lucas van Valckenborch was born in Louvain in 1535 into a vast dynasty of painters. After the religious unrest of the Netherlands, he led a mobile career which took him notably to Liège, Aachen, Linz and Frankfurt. He worked for Archduke Matthias of Habsburg and became one of the main representatives of the Flemish mountainous landscape of the second half of the 16th century. His panoramas do not copy a single place: they combine real observations, travel memories and ideal construction.
