Lucien Pissarro was born in Paris in 1863, eldest son of Camille Pissarro. He grew up in contact with the Impressionists and learned to look at the landscape directly, in its variations of light and season. In the 1880s, he met Georges Seurat and Paul Signac and experimented with the division of color. He was also interested in illustration and wood engraving. His landscapes established a discreet dialogue between French tradition and the English countryside. Died in 1944, he left a work of painter and book craftsman, as well as a living link between two artistic cultures.
