Born in Madrid in 1825 within the Madrazo dynasty, Luis started in the studio of his father José then studied at the School of San Fernando. In 1848, he left for Rome, attended the Academy of Saint Luke and the Villa Medici, then met Friedrich Overbeck, whose Nazarene aesthetic left a lasting mark on his art. After trips to Paris, Venice, Munich and Berlin, he returned to Spain and led a career as a portrait painter, history painter and teacher.
