Luis Menéndez Pidal combines Roman drawing, Asturian observation and emotion contained in a painting where faith and the face remain deeply human.
Born in Pajares in 1861, Luis Menéndez Pidal first completed law studies before entering the Madrid Higher School of Painting with Alejandro Ferrant. A boarding school took him to Rome in 1886, where he worked with Francisco Pradilla and José Villegas, then traveled to Naples, Venice and Florence. He participated in the decoration of San Francisco el Grande and won at the National Exhibitions: second medal in 1890, first medals in 1892 and 1899, medal of honor in 1924. Salus infirmorum, awarded in 1899, gave the Marian theme a dimension of concrete relief and silent emotion. The Self-portrait of 1907 is on the contrary direct, sober and without apparatus. Professor, decorator and academician, Menéndez Pidal also cultivates rural scenes, legends and a fantastic vein.
