Luis Tristan was probably born in Toledo between 1580 and 1585. In 1603, he was documented as an apprentice in Greco's workshop, from which he noted the lengthening of the figures, the spiritual tension and certain colored harmonies. After 1606, he traveled to Italy, probably with Ribera, and discovered Caravaggesque naturalism in Rome at the time of its full diffusion. When he returned to Toledo around 1613, Tristan brought together these two apparently opposing experiences: the visionary instability of Greco and a concrete light which revealed skin, fabric and object.
