Active around 1520 · The first Renacimiento of Castile after Juan de Flandes
The Master of Becerril is an anonymous painter active around 1520, probably in the Palencia region. His convention name comes from the altarpiece of San Pelayo de Becerril de Campos, today at Malaga Cathedral. He is considered the most accomplished of the disciples of Juan de Flandes and also knows the art of Pedro Berruguete. To these Castilian and Flemish legacies are added Italian novelties, often transmitted by engraving: ancient architecture, reliefs and sculpted figures integrated into the decor. The landscape, precise and deep, nevertheless remains indebted to Juan de Flandes. Saint Barbara, around 1520, clearly shows this mixture. The saint bears the palm of martyrdom and lay hands on its tower, where the inscription "Santa Varbara" guarantees identification. The vertical format and frontality maintain the function of an altarpiece, while the landscape and architectural construction open the space according to new expectations. The Prado also preserves four prophets from the bench of another altarpiece. Together, they show a workshop capable of linking devotional tradition, Flemish observation and resurgent vocabulary. The "Maestro de Becerril" selection notably compares Saint Barbara.
Becerril's Master does not choose between Flanders, Castile and Italy: he uses the precision of one, the altarpiece of the other and the architecture of the third.
