The Master of Saint Cecilia is a conventional painter active in Florence between the end of the 13th and the beginning of the 14th century. Its name comes from the large bib representing Saint Cecilia surrounded by eight episodes from her life, painted around 1305 -1310 for the Florentine church dedicated to the saint and today kept at the Uffizi. The artist remains anonymous; some researchers have proposed to identify him with Gaddo Gaddi, mosaicist and father of Taddeo Gaddi, without this hypothesis being definitively established. His painting is located in the direct vicinity of Giotto. The characters are no longer simple signs placed on gold: they have volume, weight and expressive gestures. Architectures, comparable to small sectional scenes clearly organize meetings, marriages, conversions, trials and martyrs. In Saint Cecilia and scenes from her life, the saint sits in the center with book and palm, while the side episodes lead the gaze from her marriage to her torture. The Maestà attributed to the same circle retain the sacred frontality of the Byzantine tradition, but the angels group with more depth around Mary and the Child. This alliance between gold background, bodily presence and concrete narration makes the master a privileged witness to Florentine innovations around 1300. The "Master of Saint Cecilia" selection notably compares The Virgin to the Child enthroned with six angels and The Virgin Mary enthroned with the Child. His reading favors movement.
The Master of Saint Cecilia brings the story into the architecture: each wall becomes a scene where gestures, looks and faith unfold with clarity.
