Maxime Maufra was born in Nantes in 1861 and died in Poncé-sur-le-Loir in 1918. Intended primarily for family commerce, he discovered outdoor painting during stays in England, where the landscapes of Turner and Constable nourished his gaze. He painted while working in trading before definitively choosing an artistic career at the end of the 1880s. In 1890, he stayed in Pont-Aven and Pouldu, in contact with Gauguin's circle. Without entirely adopting synthetism, Maufra simplified its masses, strengthened its colors and gave more autonomy to the rhythm of the touch. Corn field in the Saint-Jean-du-Doigt valley combines synthetic construction and atmospheric depth. The bottom of the port of Goulphar and the Port Haliguen Lighthouse contrast the mineral mass with the movements of the water, while The Port of La Rochelle at dusk transforms quays and boats with colorful light. Maxime Maufra does not only describe a coast: his touch makes you feel the wind, the tide and the moment when the sky changes the color of the entire landscape.
