Intended primarily for family commerce, he discovered outdoor painting during stays in England, where the landscapes of Turner and Constable nourished his gaze. He painted while working in trading before definitively choosing an artistic career at the end of the 1880s. In 1890, he stayed in Pont-Aven and Pouldu, in contact with Gauguin's circle.
