Born in Bad Radkersburg in 1850, Marie Egner first studied in Graz with Hermann von Konigsbrunn, then continued her training in Düsseldorf from 1872 to 1875 with Carl Jungheim. Installed in Vienna in 1882, she joined the circle of landscaper Emil Jakob Schindler and worked for several summers in the Plankenberg colony alongside Olga Wisinger-Florian, Tina Blau and Carl Moll. The direct study of nature gradually distanced her from the workshop-built landscape. Egner prefers modest motifs: a tree-lined river, a flowering garden, sun-heated walls, a farm or undergrowth. His touch, at first precise and tonal, becomes faster and brighter; the atmosphere unites forms without erasing them. She travels to Dalmatia, Italy, Germany, England and the Netherlands, while exhibiting in numerous European centers. Faced with restrictions imposed on women by official institutions, Egner taught and organized her own networks. She founded a painting school for women and participated in the group of Eight Artists in 1901 with Wisinger-Florian and other creators. A major exhibition at the Künstlerhaus in 1926 dedicated her career to her. The progressive loss of sight then forced her to retire.
