Marinus Claeszoon van Reymerswale was born around 1489 in Reimerswaal, Zeeland, and remained documented until around 1546. His biography remains incomplete. He seems to have started his career in the artistic world of Antwerp before returning to his region of origin and then settling in Goes. His work focuses on a small number of themes which he takes up in numerous variations: Saint Jerome in his study, the Vocation of Saint Matthew, the Virgin and Child and especially financiers, money changers, receivers and customs agents.
