Kyoto, 1733 -1795 · Nature observation and Maruyama-Shijo school
Maruyama Okyo was born in 1733 into a rural family in the province of Tanba and died in Kyoto in 1795. Trained with Ishida Yûtei, painter of the Tsurusawa branch of the Kanô school, he also worked on megane-e, images intended for optical devices which introduce him to perspective effects. From the 1760s, he founded a language of shasei, study from nature, without renouncing decorative formats, Chinese painting of birds and flowers or fantastic subjects. This alliance became the basis of the Maruyama school then Maruyama-Shijô. Dragon and tiger, dated 1770, contrasted the atmospheric washes of the celestial dragon with the meticulous coat of the terrestrial tiger. Pines under the snow, made for the Mitsui family, uses the light support to weigh the snow on the branches. Green maple and waterfall shows how precise observation can remain monumental. Even The Ghost of Oyuki, a famous image of a spectral woman without feet, owes its strength to the delicate credibility of the face and fabrics. At Okyo, realism and wonder are never mutually exclusive. The "Maruyama Okyo" selection notably compares The Ghost of Oyuki and Dragon and Tiger. His reading favors atmosphere.
Okyo observes the world precisely enough to make the fantastic plausible: the tiger breathes, the snow weighs and even the ghost seems to have been seen.
