1512 -1516 · Isenheim altarpiece, Antonines and vision of suffering
In the Isenheim altarpiece, Matthias Grünewald confronts sick bodies, monsters and the light of salvation with an intensity designed for the patients of the Antonine commandery.
The Isenheim altarpiece is the masterpiece of Matthias Grünewald and one of the most powerful ensembles of the German Renaissance. Between 1512 and 1516, the painter created the panels intended for the main altar of the Antonine commandery of Issenheim, south of Colmar, while Niclaus de Haguenau provided the sculpted part. Sponsor Guy Guers then directed a hospital establishment which notably welcomed victims of heartache, an illness caused by ergot. The altarpiece is therefore designed for spectators confronted with physical pain. The altarpiece is therefore designed for spectators confronted with physical pain. Annunciation, Concert of Angels, Nativity and Resurrection bring out luminous colors which lead from incarnation to transfiguration. The second opening places Saint Anthony at the center of the hospital world. The Temptation of Saint Anthony represents the saint attacked by monsters sent by Satan. Creatures scratch, bite and strike; in a corner, a being with a swollen stomach and altered limbs personifies the symptoms of the disease. Grünewald seeks neither classical calm nor ideal beauty. He distorts bodies, fractures the landscape and makes each material disturbing in order may the inner struggle become visible. The altarpiece thus brings together medieval medicine, liturgy, sculpture and painting in an image machine capable of moving from horror to hope. The selection "Matthias Grünewald, Issenheim altarpiece" notably compares Temptation of Saint Anthony. His reading favors space.
In Issenheim, Grünewald does not look away from illness: he transforms his violence into a path that leads from the wounded body to the light.
