1858 -1924 · Boston, Paris, Venice and American post-impressionism
Maurice Prendergast was born in 1858 in Saint John, Newfoundland and grew up in Boston, where his family settled in 1868. After working in poster design and commercial decoration, he moved to Paris in 1891. He studied at the Colarossi and Julian academies, discovered the research of Cézanne, Vuillard, Bonnard and Toulouse-Lautrec, then developed a way free from academic naturalism. His watercolors and monotypes transformed parks, beaches, walks and urban crowds into networks of short touches, firm contours and juxtaposed colors. During a stay in Italy in 1898 -1899, Venice offered him an ideal theater: facades, water, processions and silhouettes responded to each other like the tesserae of a mosaic. Back in the United States, Prendergast became an independent figure of modernity. He exhibited with The Eight in 1908, while remaining distinct from the dark realism of the Ashcan School, and participated in the organization of the Armory Show of 1913. Installed in New York in 1914 with his brother Charles, he continued landscapes and scenes of leisure in a denser material, nourished by Cézanne, Matisse and Fauvism. Park landscapes and beach scenes show its privileged subject: a modern society observed as a decorative rhythm where figures, trees, water and sky share the same colorful vibration. The "Maurice Prendergast" selection notably compares Landscape (park scene) and Landscape (beach scene). His reading favors figures.
At Maurice Prendergast, the crowd does not dissolve: each silhouette becomes a note of color in the music of a park, a beach or a walk.
