Melchior Broederlam was documented as an active painter in Ypres between 1381 and 1410. He worked in the service of Louis de Male, Count of Flanders, then became court painter to Philippe le Hardi, Duke of Burgundy. The archives mention banners, coats of arms, decorations, polychromies and various commissions, but most of this production has disappeared. His name remains attached to the two altarpieces commissioned in 1390 for the Chartreuse de Champmol, necropolis of the Dukes of Burgundy near Dijon. Installed in 1399, the ensembles combined precious sculpture, polychromy and painted panels. On the shutters of the Altarpiece of the Crucifixion, Broederlam represents the Annunciation, the Visitation, the Presentation in the Temple and the Flight into Egypt. It retains the golden background and vibrant colors of international Gothic, while exploring a decisive novelty: open buildings, deep landscapes, shadows and concrete details give the story a spatial reality. In The Annunciation and the Visitation, the architecture combines symbolic interior, Italian portico and Flemish nature.
