1602 -1660 · Rome, bamboccianti and Caravaggesque light
Born and died in Rome, Michelangelo Cerquozzi acquired a great reputation without having, it seems, left his city. Nicknamed "Michelangelo delle Battaglie", he first trained with painters specializing in combat, then became closer to Pieter van Laer and the bamboccianti movement, devoted to scenes of popular life. His presence at the Academy of Saint-Luc is attested as early as 1634 and his works appear in the collections of Cardinals Flavio Chigi and Bernardino Spada. He also practiced landscape and still life, collaborating with Angeluccio for figures and with architectural specialists. In Cabin and Young People Picking Fruits, Caravaggesque Light, characters ordinary and abundant objects transform everyday life into a pictorial spectacle. The "Michelangelo Cerquozzi" selection notably compares Young People Picking Fruit and Cabin. His reading favors drawing.
Cerquozzi gives Roman everyday life the density of a history scene: light, gestures and matter become an event.
