Michiel Jansz van Mierevelt was born in Delft in 1567 into the family of a goldsmith. After initial local training, he left for Utrecht with Anthonie Blocklandt, where he learned history painting. Returning to Delft, he joined the guild of Saint-Luc in 1587. However, he abandoned the large narrative scenes for a booming portrait market. The decision proved decisive: Van Mierevelt became the reference portraitist of the Orange court, the Estates General and urban elites.
