1891 -1953 · Krakow, Montparnasse and School of Paris
Moïse Kisling was born in Krakow in 1891 and died in Sanary-sur-Mer in 1953. Son of a tailor, he left general studies to follow the teaching of Józef Pankiewicz, admirer of Cézanne, Renoir and Bonnard. On his advice, he moved to Paris in 1910 and settled in Montparnasse. His workshop quickly became a meeting place for Modigliani, Soutine, Foujita, Pascin and the writers or models of Parisian bohemia. Volunteered in the Foreign Legion during the First World War, injured in 1915, he then obtained French nationality. Kisling explored Cubism before constructing a more personal language: volumes simplified, continuous drawing, smooth surface and saturated color give the faces a calm, sometimes melancholic presence. The portrait of Kiki de Montparnasse, emblematic figure of workshops and cabarets, combines frontal gaze, light skin and a colored background without superfluous narrative effect. The Seated Nude shows the same search for silent monumentality: the body is defined by a supple contour and by transitions of tones rather than by an academic model. Forced into exile in the United States during the Second World War, Kisling returned to France in 1946. Portraits, nudes, flowers and landscapes extended this painting of immediate presence until his death. The selection "Moses Kisling " notably compares Kiki de Montparnasse and Nu seated. His reading favors atmosphere.
Kisling gives the face a magnetic immobility: the contour retains the shape, the color illuminates it and the look seems to remain long after the pose.
