The Van Gogh Museum preserves in Amsterdam the largest collection of works, drawings and letters by the painter, accompanied by his contemporaries.
After the death of Vincent van Gogh in 1890 and then that of his brother Theo in 1891, Jo van Gogh-Bonger preserved, studied and distributed the family ensemble. His son Vincent Willem van Gogh created the Vincent van Gogh Foundation in 1962 and entrusted the collection to the Dutch state. The museum designed by Gerrit Rietveld opened on June 2, 1973 in Amsterdam; an exhibition wing designed by Kisho Kurokawa was added in 1999. The main collection brought together around two hundred and five paintings, five hundred drawings and more than eight hundred letters, the most complete vision of Van Gogh's trajectory.
