Potsdam · Since 2017 · A major center of impressionism
The Museum Barberini opened in January 2017 on the Alter Markt in Potsdam. Its reconstructed building takes up the facade of the 18th century Barberini Palace, destroyed during the Second World War, while housing galleries contemporary. The project is initiated by Hasso Plattner, co-founder of SAP and collector. In addition to several annual temporary exhibitions, the museum permanently presents its collection of Impressionism and Post-Impressionism french. The ensemble includes one hundred and fifteen works by twenty-three artists, including Monet, Renoir, Morisot, Caillebotte, Pissarro, Sisley, Signac, Cross and Vlaminck. Forty paintings by Claude Monet constitute its heart, making Potsdam the largest presentation venue for the artist in Europe outside Paris. The selected works cover several major series: water lily pond, millstones and Parliament of London. The repetition of the motif becomes the thread ideal driver of the museum, as it shows how impressionism moved from outdoor observation to sustained research into perception, memory and color. The "Barberini Museum" selection notably compares Le Water Lilies Pool - Monet and Water Lilies - Claude Monet. His reading favors the material.
At Barberini, forty Monets allow us to see what an isolated work does not show: the thought of a painter who advances in series, revivals and variations.
