The Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum brings together in Rotterdam an encyclopedic collection shaped by donations from collectors, from the Middle Ages to current creation.
The museum opened in 1849 around the legacy of the lawyer and collector Frans Jacob Otto Boijmans. After the fire of 1864, the collection was rebuilt and enriched by many enthusiasts. The entrance to the collection of Daniël George van Beuningen in the middle of the 20th century gave the institution its current name and considerably strengthened the old masters. Throughout its history, around one thousand seven hundred private collectors have passed on nearly fifty thousand objects to the museum. Painting, sculpture, drawing, prints, photography, decorative arts and design today make up a collection of more than one hundred and fifty-five thousand works. The historic building being closed for renovation, the Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen, opened to the public in 2021, allows you to discover behind the scenes of conservation.
